At first sailors relied on the Native Americans to trade furs for weapons, trinkets, and so on. As time went on however, trappers began to prevail, cutting out the middleman, in this case the Native Americans, and making the business of trapping the high profit trade due to the ever changing demand of animal pelts for fashion in Europe.
