I don't get it, do they want the expressions to be equivalent to the other line?

Okay, you have to simplify the others expressions to see if they are equivalent.
\[ (x + 1)(x + 2)=x^2+3x+2 \]So it is equivalent to \(x^2 + 3x + 2\)
