The graph below shows a line segment AB:
graph of line AB going through ordered pairs negative 1, 5 and 2, negative 4
Which of the following equations best represents the line segment AB?
y = -3x + 2
y = -2x + 1
y = -3x - 2
y = -2x - 1

@jigglypuff314 @mathmale
jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):
y = mx + b
where m=slope and b=y-intercept
so first, what is the slope between points (-1,5) and (2,-4) ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
-3?
jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):
yes :)
then you have y = -3x + b
then temporarily plug in a point like (-1,5) for (x,y)
so 5 = -3(-1) + b solve for b

2?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
So B?
jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):
yes 2
so y = mx + b
where m=-3 and b=2

Awesome! Do you mind helping me with a few more? (:
jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):
I don't think it was B
but yeah, I can help more
