The early written languages did not use symbols for sounds. In fact, the symbols were of objects and/or concepts. Within cultural groups, the symbols came to be pronounced the same way and thus came to represent sounds. Note, however, that written Chinese is ideographic, which means a symbol represents a concept. The symbol remains the same across all Chinese dialects, but the pronuncation can change from dialect to dialect. This type of writing system serves the Chinese very well because there are many spoken languages and dialects that are often mutually unintelligible. The written language can be a major form of communication because nomatter how a symbol is pronounced, it will mean the same.
