Which of the following is not a step in solving 5x – 2(3x + 5) = 32? A. –x = 42 B. –1x = 42 C. –x + 10 = 32 D. 5x – 6x – 10 = 32

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first simplify the equation then check all the choices if it match ur simplified form...

@chrgarre12 I hope that you know how to solve for variables right?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

I am asking this because I need your opinion on how YOU would do this. What would be your first step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would distribute the 2 through the 3x and the 5, so that would become 5x-6x-10=32. I would then combine like terms so it would become -x-10=32. Then I would add ten to the 32 making it -x=42. I would then divide a negative one and it would be x=-42. The thing I'm confused about is that I thought -x and -1x were the same thing?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

they are

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Yes yout don't necessarily have to out a one in front of x. It just might seem kind of awkward.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

*you

Thanks to all three of you guys for helping!
