So the total surface area which you are given is the area of the square base, plus the area of all four triangular sides. You are told that it is a square pyramid, therefore all four triangular sides (assuming of course that it is a regular pyramid) are equal. that means that: Surface Area = SA = A_base + 4*A_triangle You know the total surface area SA and the area of the base (A_base), so now you can simply substitute in the known values and solve the equation for the triangle area. 189cm^2 = 49cm^2 + 4*A_triangle then subtract 49 from each side: 140cm^2 = 4*A_triangle then divide each side by 4 to finish solving A_triangle = 35cm^2
