Augustus Caesar was the adopted son of Julius Caesar, an example of the importance of adoption in Roman society. Why was adoption important? Answer It allowed fathers to carry on the family name when they had no biological sons. Taking care of orphaned children was an important cultural value in Rome. Commoners often gave up their children-only high-ranking people were deemed fit parents. It allowed important people to have several children, which was a sign of status.
