▬Sir/Ma'am, A Warm Welcome To Open Study. Sir/Ma'am please show your Working for the question you have posted.▬

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

divide the top by the bottom. for example, 5/8. divide 5 by 8, which would come out to 0.625

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

do you understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. how do you change a mixed number to an improper fraction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jgirl128

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

to turn a mixed number into a fraction, multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the result to the numerator

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

for example, 2 4/9 2 * 9 = 18 18 + 4 = 22 the denominator remains 9. so 22/9

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

get it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep? does it go the same for fraction to mixed number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i meant yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

improper fraction to mixed number.... sorry again

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

to write an improper fraction as a mixed number, divide the numerator (top part) by the denominator (bottom part). the quotient is the whole number, and the remainder is the numerator.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you simplify a fraction?

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

lets say our fraction is 4/12 simplified, 4/12 is 1/3

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

simplifying fractions means to make the fraction as simple as possible

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

why say 4/12's when you can say 1/3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good point

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

or why say 4/8 when you can say 1/2?

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

thanks

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

do you understand it now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah but what do I put beside the question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you simplify a fraction is the question

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

theres two methods. method 1: try dividing both the top and bottom of the fraction until you can't go any further. ex. 24/108 = 12/54 = 6/27 = 2/9 method 2: divide both the top and the bottom of the fraction by the greatest common factor ex. the biggest number that goes into 8 and 12 is 4 so divided both top and bottom of 8/12 by 4 it comes out to: 2/3

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

do you get it now?
