an equation with only one variable (obviously) only has one letter in it, and x is usually that letter. an equation with two variables has two letters in it, x and y are usually those letters. one variable equations are usually easier to solve than two variable equations because two variable equations require two different equations that contain the two variables. an equation with one variable gives you one answer, aka a constant. in an equation with two variables, the value of both the equations usually depends on the value of each other.
