Emily and Luke each rented a movie from two different stores. Emily paid $3.50 for the video plus $1 for each day it was late. Luke spent $5.50 for his video plus $0.50 for each day it was late. If they both spent the same amount of money after the video was returned, how many days after the due date did they keep the video?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol a lot of reading

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know right lol @INeedHelpWithThisQuestion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ill try to answer it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got it! At "5 days" because They will both be $7.50!

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

3.50 + x(1) = y 3.50 represents the amount of money Emily paid for the video. x represents the number of additional days she had the video and 1 represents the cost each day the video is late. y is the total amount of money she spent. 5.50 + x(.50) = y 5.50 represents the amount of money Luke paid for the video. x represents the number of additional days he had the video and .50 represents the cost each day the video is late. y is the total amount of money he spent. I'm gonna create a table just to help present the information and make it easier to understand. Emily: Days Money 1 3.50 2 4.50 3 5.50 4 6.50 5 7.50 Luke: Days Money 1 5.50 2 6.00 3 6.50 4 7.00 5 7.50 you can see the common day is the fifth day at $7.50 so the answer is 5 days :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you certain?? "5" days isn't one of the available choices... even though your work appears right /:

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

what are the choices?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1,2,3,4

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

hmm.. the only thing I can think of is that they count day 1 as day 2. so instead it would be Emily: Days Money 1 4.50 2 5.50 3 6.50 4 7.50 Luke: Days Money 1 6.00 2 6.50 3 7.00 4 7.50 so it would day 4 and they each spent $7.50?

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

I'm not sure, it's just the only thing I could think of.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm.. ill try and figure something out... thank you so much though!!!

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

I'm pretty sure 4 days would be the answer but no problem :) good luck!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What are the options?

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

1, 2, 3, or 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer seems to be 5 because 5 is 7.50...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

must be a typo

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

I agree.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oops it IS 4, i counted 3.50 and 5.50 as day 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Day 1 actually equals 450 and 600

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

same, I figured they didn't count 3.50 and 5.50 as day 1 too.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

yeah, that's the only logical thing I could think of too.

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

@chariety101 good luck!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yaas good luck! answer:4!
