Which of the following statements best describes the effect of replacing the graph of y = f(x) with the graph of y = f(x) - 11? A. The graph of y = f(x) will shift up 11 units. B.The graph of y = f(x) will shift right 11 units. C. The graph of y = f(x) will shift left 11 units. D. The graph of y = f(x) will shift down 11 units.

im not good at graphs and I wanted to know if someone would help me I think the answer is B

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

saying f(x) - 11 is the same as saying y-11 since y = f(x)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so what does that mean? It means EVERY point on f(x) has been shifted down 11 units. This is because y handles the vertical location of each point. So y-11 changes that vertical location by 11 units down.

oh ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is d

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
