A building has an entry the shape of a parabolic arch 22 ft high and 28 ft wide at the base as shown below.



Find an equation for the parabola if the vertex is put at the origin of the coordinate system.

x^2 = -ay
14^2 = -a(22)
196 = -22a
a = -8.9

x^2 = -8.9y

Is that right?

I guess it is... though I don't like decimals all that much, i'd stick to fractions ^^
