Which of these statements is correct with respect to osteoclasts? These cells cause cartilage to build up, thus helping to produce new cartilaginous bone. These cells cause the reabsorption of bone, thus helping to regenerate bone. These cells cause bones to build up, thus helping in the production of new bone.
I think it's the last one? This is a mix of a history and 'philosophy' of science question. So a theory is set of very well-supported principles which explain certain phenomena - the theory of natural selection, for example, explains concepts like speciation and adaptation. Theories become theories after rigorous amounts of testing, but first they start out as hypotheses - hypotheses are, in a sense, predictions: if condition is met, then such event will occur. The extensive testing of these related hypotheses produces a good theory! Ah - and one more clue. The theory of natural selection is attributed to Charles Darwin (and sometimes his buddy, Wallace). His book proved to be wildly popular, and he basically laid the groundwork of what we know as evolution today.
