Can someone explain what the wave function is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in classical(newtonian) mechanics,the state(or information)of an object is completely described by the object's position and momentum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in quantum mechanics,the state of a particle(electrons,photons[actually every object]) is completely described by its wave function and the future of this particle is calculated using the wave functiion{where'll it go,what'll be its momentum}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

weird thing is wave function is generally a complex function, and magnitude of the wave function is proportional to the probability of where the particle is
