@e.mccormick ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@phi ?

OpenStudy (phi):

do you see the little triangle ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah

OpenStudy (phi):

do you see the big triangle that the little triangle is inside of ? the big triangle's bottom side is 2 times bigger than the little triangle's bottom side (notice the marks that show the little triangle's bottom is ½ of whole bottom line)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, yes I see that

OpenStudy (phi):

the big triangle's top is 2 times bigger than the little triangle's top. any guess how big the big's triangle's left side is , compared to the little triangle's left side?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Umm, Is it 8?

OpenStudy (phi):

The idea is the big triangle's left side is 2 times bigger than the little triangle's left side.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so would I divide by two, or what exactly are you getting at?

OpenStudy (phi):

one reason to study math, is to make people think. here is what you know 16 is the big triangle's side 2x-6 is the little triangle's side 16 is 2 times bigger than the little side 16 = 2 * (2x-6) now we have an equation. Can you solve it for x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh my god! Yes! Thank you, that didn't click until now!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=7 right?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you very much for all of the help :)

OpenStudy (phi):
