HELP!!! MEDAL AND FAN!!! 1. You are asked to construt a segment congruent to AB. As a firt step, you draw a ray. Which of the following, if true of the ray, would be most helpful? A. The ray is drawn on the paper shorter than AB B. The ray is drawn on the paper longer than AB. C. The ray is drawn parrell to AB D. The ray is drawn perpendicular to AB

OpenStudy (jessiegonzales):

|dw:1404431285093:dw| AB has a line above!!! @happytales

@jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Any ideas?

OpenStudy (jessiegonzales):

I believe that answer is B?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yeah you need it to be longer so you can then cut it down to size (to the proper length of AB)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you'd use a compass to cut it down to size

OpenStudy (jessiegonzales):

oNe MORE PLS!! wHICH OF THE FOLLOWING IN NOT used when making contructions? a ruler a compass a straightedge a pencil

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

which one do you think it is?

OpenStudy (jessiegonzales):

C?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

why that?

OpenStudy (jessiegonzales):

Cause you need a pencil and a ruler and compass???

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but how can you really use the tick marks on the ruler? The answer to the question is "no" (at least not perfectly).

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So instead of using a ruler, you use a straightedge. Both are straight, but the straightedge has no markings on it. It's only used to draw straight lines.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

It's a bit counter-intuitive I know. Usually you use a ruler to measure things (like a scale drawing), but in Euclidean geometry, you are usually only allowed a compass, straight-edge, and pencil. This is because the concept of measuring with a ruler isn't accurate.
