The pope Urban I was losing political power in Europe. The orthodox church in the east was menaced by the Muslims and as a result Alexius the head of the eastern church (Byzantine Empire) asked for financial aid to the pope. The pope saw this as an opportunity to regain power in the east and called for an spiritual war against the infidel (Muslims). Jerusalem was in Muslim hands for a while after they had conquered the Jews, but it was okay because they kept the holy city open for Christian and Jewish pilgrims. Then some radical Turkish converts decided they didn't want to allow Jews or Christians in.
