A young boy has been found, and police are trying to locate his family. They take a DNA sample from him and begin collecting DNA samples from families who have missing children. If police use DNA samples only from the fathers, which type of DNA technology can they use to identify the boy's parent? Y-chromosome analysis mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) analysis VNTRs (variable tandem repeats) PCR (polymerase chain reaction) analysis

Which do you think it is? Why or why not? It would be easier to tutor you if you explained what about the question is giving you trouble.

@Abhisar I am thinking of taking a break for even attempting to do anything with questions like these.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

@mrdoldum :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Abhisar That should be "of". I really have to get more sleep. I've slept 4 hours in a so far, 72 hour period.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ARG! When will the quit calling it polymerase chain reaction analysis!!!!

OpenStudy (abhisar):

??

@Abhisar Does not really analyze anything. It only makes a bunch of copies of, hopefully, the correct region. Even if it is the correct size you cannot be sure. I was working on the cox1 gene in an aphid species mitochondria once and had a triple band in my gel. I did the proper procedures and could not get results because in insects cox1 in the mitochondria is frequently inserted into the nucleus and becomes a pseudogene. So, I did some other things and finally separated out over 18 bands that were all within 10 base pairs of length from each other. It took me 4 separate gel runs to find the final number of copies, and that final gel run took over 6 hours @ 5 volts. A normal run is ~45 minutes @ 135 volts (only for TBE gel).
