Identify the function and all transformations of the function: f(x)= |3(x-2)|+5 ?

OpenStudy (precal):

parent function is absolute value

OpenStudy (precal):

do you know what 5 does to the parent function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not a clue sorry -_- I'm new at this

OpenStudy (precal):

ok number outside of function moves it up or down up is positive number down is negative number ok so +5 moves it how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

moves it up :)

OpenStudy (precal):

up 5 units

OpenStudy (precal):

x-2 ok notice this number is with x x is a liar + number moves it left - number moves it right someone once told me all of your ex-boyfriend/ex-girlfriend are liars so how does -2 move it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm... moves it to the right?

OpenStudy (precal):

yes because the number is with x and x is a liar so 2 right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh okay that makes since lol

OpenStudy (precal):

3 is a vertical stretch a>1 is a vertical stretch always take the absolute value of that a number ok that is it vertical stretch (scale factor of 3), right 2, up 5

OpenStudy (precal):

function is absolute value

OpenStudy (precal):

you can also, say it moved 2 units horizontally to the right , it moved 5 units vertically up or something to that effect

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so that would be the function part of it then?

OpenStudy (precal):

it is the absolute value function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about the transformation???

OpenStudy (precal):

the movement of the functions are the transformations. Transformations is how you change the parent function
