please help!! IS b PERP TO a? Justify your answer.
|dw:1404545211662:dw|
You need to find the gradients of the lines. Could you draw it a second time to make it more clear what equations apply to which line?
sure one second
|dw:1404546050668:dw|
Any other information given?
no
How would we set that up? 2X + 37 + 2X + 4 = 180 4 X + 41 = 180 4 X = 139 X = 32.25 ?
Every angle need to be equal to 90 degrees if a is to be perpendicular to b i.e 2x +4 = 90 x = 43 2x + 37 = 90 x = 26.5 As we are getting different values of x, the equations cannot both be equal to 90 degrees at the same value of x which basically means they are not both equal to 90 degrees... thus, as far as I can tell, a is not perpendicular to b
so b is not perp to a since the angles are different values
WAIT! Made a mistake! one moment please!
ok
2x + 4 = 90 (same argument as before) x = 43 3y - 21 = 90 y = 37 now 90 - 90 = 0 which means that if we subtract any of these equations from each other the end result should equal zero (2x + 4) - (3y - 21) = 0 2x - 3y = -25 2x = 3y -25 2(43) = 3(37) - 25 86 = 86 0 = 0 if we subtract each side from the other. as they are equal we have to 90 degree angles next to each other which means the other side of the line will have the exact same, meaning the lines are perpendicular to each other.
Thank you so much. This helped a lot .
Sorry about the first flop! And you're welcome :)
