y = –3x – 1 3x + y = – 1 Rewrite the second equation as follows: 3x + y = -1 subtract 3x y = -3x - 1 The second equation is identical to the first equation. They are one and the same equation. They are consistent because they are the same equation. And they are dependent equation because they are not different equations.
