that's a good guess.

since you don't have any word choices (or do you?), I would've guessed 'adherent' as answer. this would be more general than your choice.

also, if you're writing complementary, then the reader would think that the DNA that is adherent on the array surface is already complementary to itself, and that the sample somehow replaces that.

what do you think about my suggestion?

I just reread the section in my book , it is complimentary.
