Nephron: the functional Unit of the Kidney A cross section of the Kidney shows that it is arranged into two layers; an outer cortex and inner medulla. The layers are formed by the organised arrangement of microscopic tubules called nephrons, 80% of which are contained within the cortex while the other 20% drops down into the medulla. Nephrons are the smallest functional units of the kidney.
