How did some formerly enslaved African Americans in the South respond to advancing Union forces?

during the reconstruction era in 1865, most cities in the south were in shambles because of the horrible economy which was ruined by the civil war. since the emancipation of slaves happened in 1865, slaveholders lost their slaves. so African Americans worked the lowest paying jobs ie. labor. many men worked on railways, hotels, and lumber mills. most women worked as nurses, maids, cooks, laundresses, and in hotels.
