Not really similar. Hungarian revolution was nation wide anticommunist revolt, which desired to overthrow communist regime implemented by USSR as occupational government. Hungary before 1956 was in horrible economic shape, it was treated as a defeated nation and exploited by USSR as payback for siding with Germany. Majority of Hungary was still in ruin, and poverty was widespread. Hungary was run by people who were complete traitors to their nation because their true heart was in Moscow and Rakoczi choose to die in USSR than in his native Hungary when he was kicked in 1956. Also international reaction to events was different. The leftist groups around the world saw in Hungarian revolution as a fascist uprising and wanted to be defeated. Handful thoroughly anticommunist countries had sympathies to it.
Czechoslovakia was a different case. It was process that started well in the early sixties where general liberal atmosphere caused the communist rule to weaken and eventually lost control over media, culture, art, civic and social organizations, youth, and religion. In this liberal, but leftist base atmosphere, the Prague Spring of 1968 was a closure of long process where society generally rejected the single party rule, but without armed confrontation. Censorship was lifted in spring of 1968 and liberal course was top down approach starting from the highest circles of the government and resonating with the population. But unlike Hungary, Czechoslovakia was multinational country, where relationship between Czechs and Slovak deteriorated in the 60's, and became political burden over the country. Slovakia experienced a significant social and economic progress and was not willing to submit to Prague. Unlike Hungary, Czechoslovakia in the 1960's was prosperous, and had the highest living standard in the Eastern Block. The liberation demand was not driven by economic condition as happened in Hungary, and there was no violent demand for ending communist rule. The society believed in the constitutional resolution in dealing with a political crisis. Also Czechoslovakia was NOT occupied by USSR before August 20, 1968 and there was no foreigner troops like was the case of Hungary. The international reaction to Prague Spring and subsequent occupation of Czechoslovakia was completely different. The West wanted Prague Spring to fail, there was no any international support to the liberal, leftist government from the West with exception of Austria and Italy. West Germans [to whom Czechoslovakia had no mutual recognition until 1970], they took occupation of Prague with a great pleasure. The leftist in the West were furious with Moscow. Prague Spring and its subsequent defeat was extreme disappointment to other socialist countries that had not good relationship with Moscow like Yugoslavia, Romania, China, and Albania. The last one broke any participation with Moscow, while Yugoslavia aligned its military doctrine to fight along side of NATO against USSR in the possible war.
The Prague Spring or Hungarian Revolution showed to the world that USSR is not ready to let Eastern Europe go. It created extremely hopeless situation among population, because the West was confirming the status of postwar division of Europe and did not care for anything to confront USSR. Hungarian revolution was extremely bloody, but quickly defeated. Czechoslovakian protests became violent only after Warsaw pact troops invaded the country, and the crisis lasted for year or two, where occasional violence flared till 1969. At the end both countries ended much weaker, but Hungary achieved a period of rather lenient communism, basic prosperity, and indifference, while Czechoslovakia entered prolonged period of economic and political stagnation.
