1. water has a high specific heat capacity, there are little fluctuations in temperature because of this. It also aids organisms to thermoregulate (sweating cools you you down because water evaporates off your body taking energy (~heat) with it).

2. When water freezes it becomes less dense than liquid water and so it floats. This allows for bodies of water to stay liquid in the winter and life in them to survive.
