Capillary action is a result of water molecules, which are polar (they have slight negative and positive charges on either end) sticking together and to the walls of the narrow xylem tubes to make their way upwards against gravity in plants, including trees. This is how water and nutrients from the soil are taken in by the roots and pushed upward to the leaves when the tree has no 'heart' to pump the water upwards. Because this keeps the plant alive, and plants make glucose for chemical energy during photosynthesis, all life is dependent on green plants,
