Oh man, where to start? They started with the Warsaw Pact, an opposite of the Marshall Plan, so it could secure its allies. That meant it provided financial stability to countries that would support them, and stay communist. 
Then, there's East Berlin, which they forced into poverty and tried to cut off all connection with West Berlin through the creation of the Berlin Wall, which is sorta a literal force for the 'Iron Curtain' British PM Churchill talked about.
The Arms Race, which meant they worked on producing as effective and advanced arms as possible against the US. 
Space - They worked hard to make sure they weren't falling behind in any category. even in space ;)
They cut down all revolutions. One HUGE example is the Hungarian Revolution, which they used forces to dispel and enforce communism
Then, well, there's the propaganda. Do I need to explain that?
