Brutus said he killed Caesar for the welfare of Rome, but if you really think about it, he did much more harm than good. Romans are used to voting for their government. This has been a long tradition in the Roman Republic. By using a knife to change the leader instead of an election, Brutus destroyed democracy in Rome. Does this sound like something that is in the best interests of the country? Brutus says he was Caesar’s friend. Some friend! Instead of talking to Caesar about things, Brutus stabbed him with a knife. We should all be so lucky to have friends like Brutus! If Brutus was worried about Caesar gaining too much power, he could have done many things about his worries. He could have exiled Caesar – sent him out of the country. Caesar could have been locked up. Or he could have been removed from his position. But Brutus was blood-thirsty. He wanted Caesar dead so badly that he covered his hands in Caesar’s blood to celebrate his crime. And let’s look at Rome now. The country is on the brink of civil war. Hundreds, maybe thousands will die. Houses and cities will be destroyed. And for what? When it’s all over, Rome will be under one person. Brutus accomplished nothing by killing Caesar. Brutus’s murder of Caesar was a betrayal. He betrayed his friend. He betrayed his country, which he claims to care so much about. And he betrayed each and every citizen of Rome. He does not deserve your loyalty or support. He should be chased out of the city, never to return.
