Most sports drinks are isotonic in relation to human body fluids. Explain why athletes should drink solutions that are isotonic to body fluids when they exercise rather than ones that are hypotonic to body fluids (contain a greater proportion of water in comparison to the fluids in and around human body fluids). @Maddiebee_33 @Whitemonsterbunny17 @Schleifspur @tester97 Because a fluid thats more isotonic will take in and release the same amount of liquid?
Cells have a tendency to try and reach equilibrium--- the same amount of water outside the cell as inside. This is known as osmosis. If a cell absorbs too much water from it's surroundings in effort to reach equilibrium, it may explode which can be very dangerous even deadly for the athlete. By drinking isotonic solutions, their cells won't need to absorb huge amounts of water (because it would the same amount as inside the cell by definition of isotonic) and therefore won't explode.
