What role did Increase Mather, Cotton Mather’s father, play in helping to end the trials? He postulated in a book that it would be better to release true witches than to punish innocent people. He didn’t play a role at all; he was upset that the governor ended everything before eradicating all the witches. He decided that the Devil could trick people by sending out spectres of innocent people. He wondered how so many righteous people in one area could suddenly become witches.

Wrong place, but the father's name was Increase Mather. He wrote " Cases of Conscience Concerning Evil Spirits .etc." in which he said "It were better that Ten Suspected Witches should escape, than that one Innocent Person should be Condemned."
