Flash back is a transition to a earlier event or scene. It interrupts the normal chronological development of the story. The affect it has is it gives you a better understanding on why certain things are happening and a better understanding of the character also.

b. A sudden and disturbing vivid memory of an event in the past

A flashback would interrupt the flow of chronological order or the rhythm- of the plot.

Most often, flashbacks will allow us to understand why some events have taken place or give us a deeper understanding of the background to the character(s)
