People remember George Washington as our first President also a great General but what they don’t know is that he was a great business man his Estate is totally self sufficient. The property consists of 500 acres, he diided the Estsate into 5 different farms which has separate gardens one that he grew tobacco in and one he grew the household’s vegetables, fruit and other perishable items for consumption. The upper garden and greenhouse. here is also a smokehouse a wash-house a coach house, on the grounds and contains George Washington's survey equipment, weapons, and clothing, as well as dentures worn by George Washington and much more.

More information about Mount Vernon is they have an icehouse they grew cotton, silk and had a salt house. A gardener house and a 16 sided treaded barn. The old tomb is located along the river, and the new tomb, containing George and Martha Washington, is on property with the slave burial ground. There is a pioneer Farmer site, which is a 4 acre working farm that includes a re-creation of Washington's 16-sided treading barn.

Mount Vernon was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and is today listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is still owned and maintained in trust by The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, and is open every day of the year. Though, admitting the public is not a new innovation, but maintenance of a tradition over 200 years old begun by George Washington in1796.
