what are explanatory variables?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Two events or random variables are dependent if they are not independent. In regression, the variable whose values are supposed to be explained by changes in the other variable (the the independent or explanatory variable). Usually one regresses the dependent variable on the independent variable.

Still not sure what that means

OpenStudy (geekfromthefutur):

In statistics there are a number of different ways to classify variables. One of the many ways that variables can be examined it to consider the difference between explanatory and response variables. The correct identification of these variables has a direct influence on other aspects of statistics, such as the construction of a scatter plot and the slope of a regression line.

so the explanatory variables are like independent variables

OpenStudy (geekfromthefutur):

Exactly
