To win a certain state lottery, players must correctly choose 4 numbers (in any order) from the numbers 1 to 40. How many different 4 number combinations are there? A. 800 B. 91390 C. 160 D. 24

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so any digit from 0-9 can be in one of the places

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10x10x10x10 or 10^4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my bad

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just got confused lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0-9 means ten different possible numbers right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can have ten possible in four different 'slots'

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lets say there were 2 slots

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok im following so far

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and the first slot was a 0, while the second one changed... 01, 02, 03.... all the way to 09

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so when the first slot is 0, there are ten different possibilities, because there are ten different numbers for the second slot

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i forgot 00.. but you get the point

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right so when i worked it out i got 160.....or did i do something wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What did you do to get 160?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just took 160 and divided it by 4. I took all of the numbers and divided by 4 and 160 was the only one that gave me 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ganeshie8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Type "40 choose 4" in google

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok i redid it and i got 91390

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@sourwing please explain to me how this works.... I want to know... it was bothering the crap out of me that i couldnt do this somehow

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But thank you!! next time I will keep that in mind! but i just took 40*39*38*37/1*2*3*4
