An inconsistent system of equations is a system with __________. the same line parallel lines intersecting lines and lines that have the same equation intersecting lines and lines that have the same slope

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

An inconsistent system of equations has *no solutions* That means no point of intersection So what do you think should be the answer ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The same line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh it's parallel right?

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Yes

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

No it is not the same line. Actually there are 2 possible answers if you think. Every line is parallel to itself

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

But, that is not perfectly correct. The proper word for that is *coincident* line.

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

For example, lines represented by x+y = 2 and 2x + 2y = 4 are coincident lines. But this set of equations would give you infintiely many solutions. Thus, same line is wrong.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

parallel lines are the correct answer Thanks!

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

No problem :)
