Below is a stem-and-leaf plot showing the number of pages in the last ten books that Benjamin read. A stem-and-leaf plot is shown. The stem twenty-eight has the leaves four and nine. The stem twenty-nine has the leaf seven. The stem thirty has the leaves six, seven, eight, and nine. The stem thirty-one has the leaves zero and zero. The stem thirty-two has the leaf three. How many pages were in the longest book he read? thirty-two ninety-six two hundred eighty-four three hundred twenty-three

OpenStudy (mathmate):

So this is the step-and-leaf plit 28-4,9 29-7 30-6,7,8,9 31-0,0 32-3 Which is the book with the most number of pages?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the last one?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

How many pages?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

*plot (not plit!)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

32 pages...?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

A stem-and-leaf plot is just a short hand for a lot of numbers. The first line means the books have 284 and 289 pages. Since both are between 280 and 289 pages, it s abbreviated as 28 - 4, 9 the stem stands for 280 pages, and 4, and 9 are numbers (leaves) to be added to the stem. So what would the number of pages represented by 32-3 (the last one)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

320 and 323 pages? o.O

OpenStudy (mathmate):

320+3=323 pages. 320-3 stands for only one book. Add the leaf to the stem to get the number. Is that ok?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is it 323 pages?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Yes, that is correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:D thank you
