We say a set of numbers is closed under a binary operation if you take two numbers from the set, apply the operation, and you get another number that belongs to the set. For example, consider the natural numbers, \(1,2,3,4,...\). Take two numbers and add them together; say, 1 and 2, then \(1+2=3\), and 3 is a natural number. This can be done for any two natural numbers. We then say the natural numbers are closed under addition.
