I have eliminated choices A and D and I got C! @Cosmichaotic

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why did you eliminate choice A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because there's not an = sign a+b=b+a

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You don't need to have an equal sign to use the commutative property of addition

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Step 5 isn't multiplication though..

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but the commutative property of multiplication is x*y = y*x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ie, you can multiply two numbers in any order so saying x*5 is the same as 5*x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand that part.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so where are you still stuck?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't see how the correct answer is A. I don't see how the order #'s were switched, it is simplifying the terms..

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

keep in mind that 4y-2x is really the same as 4y + (-2x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 Oh no! I see what I did wrong, I thought the original problem started at Step 1! So it is A!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you are correct
