Are there, or should there be, limits on the power of the media?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Basically there's no limit to the media. If they wanna say something you best believe it, they will say it. I personally think that there should be minimum restrictions to the media, but I believe that they should be able to tell "the world" what is happening in our world.

Perhaps it would be helpful to divide this question into smaller bits. What power or powers do some people think "the media" have? Who are "the media" any way? Media is plural. It might be useful to pin that down some. Is Utube a medium? Tweets? Is music included" What about video games? What things do people have in mind when they say "the media" has power? Where does the media's power come from, anyway? Who gives it that power? If the media is all that powerful, how can anyone be critical? That is, if the media controls what people think, how could anybody disagree with the media? Where would the critic get the idea that the media could be wrong? Isn't the critic saying something like "I am not foolish enough to believe the media, but most people are fools." Isn't that rather elitist?
