The election is sometimes called the revolution of 1800. The election of Jefferson over the incumbent President John Adams signaled a major change in governmental philosophy and led to a new emphasis on individual and state's rights as opposed to a stronger federal government. It was the first real transition of power since Adams pretty much continued Washington's ideas of government.
