OpenStudy (superhelp101):

mitochondria is an organelle found in large numbers in most cells, in which the biochemical processes of respiration and energy production occur. It has a double membrane, the inner layer being folded inward to form layers (cristae). eukaryotic cells ossess a plasma membrane (a phospholipid bilayer that encloses the cell). This relates to the theory of endosymbiosis. nome and are hypothesized to have been a sort of bacteria that somehow became incorporated into the cytoplasm of larger cells. this is how Mitochondria are able to respirate in this environment, which is advantageous.
