What is the primary factor that determines circulation of water at depth in the ocean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Where cold water sinks, and warm water rises, the underwater currents make the ratio of cold to warm differ in greater amounts and circulates the water as it tries to reach equilibrium of temperature. Bad explanation... I apologize.

Oh okay so the primary factor that determines circulation of water at depth in the ocean is the difference of cold water sinking and the warm water rising which creates currents underwater?
