This is true by the very definition of what a trapezoid is. It's a quadrilateral with one pair of opposite parallel sides (ie the bases). The other sides are NOT parallel and they are called the legs. http://www.mathwarehouse.com/geometry/quadrilaterals/trapezoid/picture-of-trapezoid.gif
