OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

What is the volume of the triangular prism below? V

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

@jim_thompson5910 One last one I didnt understand! Sorry to bug you!

OpenStudy (driftracer305):

do u have options?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what's the area of the triangular base?

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

@driftracer305 , no

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

any ideas on how to find the area of the triangular base?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

keep in mind that you have to convert everything over to the same unit

OpenStudy (driftracer305):

@Mackenzie2013 ........ just to give you a heads up.... 18 is in inches*... convert it to feet* first...............

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

Yes, 1.5 feet

OpenStudy (driftracer305):

cool

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

Okay wouldnt you do area= B*H?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no you have to use heron's formula http://www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/herons-formula.html

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

@driftracer305 Im to dumb lol I need to learn this :$

OpenStudy (driftracer305):

k umm wait.. i'll make it easy for u

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

@jim_thompson5910 I havent been taught that yet..

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh now that I look at it further, this is a right triangle

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so yeah you can use A = (b*h)/2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that formula only works when you know the base and height

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

base: b = 2 height: h = 1.5

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

3.0 divided by 2?

OpenStudy (driftracer305):

yea...... find area of triangle first..... then multiply by 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

area of triangle=1/2*b*h=1.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2*area of triangle+area of square

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answer is 12?

OpenStudy (driftracer305):

yup.... so base is 1.5 and height is 2.... so area is 1/2 * 1.5 * 2...... which equals 1.5

OpenStudy (driftracer305):

now just multiply height into it... so 1.5 * 3 = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Mackenzie2013 .tell me ?

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

Thank you!

OpenStudy (driftracer305):

@svi ....... guess she got it........ lol

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

Nno

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

Its incorrect, sorry :$

OpenStudy (driftracer305):

kid look....... just multiply 1.5 * 3 = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

shed ger 4.5?

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

Haha is that right answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the answer is 9?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

driftracer305 is correct, it's 4.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes 4.5

OpenStudy (driftracer305):

see @Mackenzie2013 ... all you have to do is find the area of the triangular base and multiply it to height.............

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Kenzie, dont feel bad. THis is stuff is hard! Im still getting the hang of it too!

OpenStudy (driftracer305):

to get area of base formula is 1.2 * base * height............ u might get confused by seing 3 values..... but the longest side doesn't count as it is the hypotenuse...... so u r only left with 1.5 and 2 correct @Mackenzie2013 ..??
