USING SCIENCE SKILLS Bats use their vocal cords to produce high-pitched sounds that are reflected by objects in the environment. The ears and brain of a bat can detect and analyze the reflected sound waves. Bats can also see, and some have very good vision in dim light. In a series of experiments, researchers investigated the roles of hearing and vision in obstacle avoidance by bats. The researchers set up a barrier of wires in a large room and recorded whether each bat hit or missed the wires as it flew back and forth across the barrier. Figure 34-1 shows the results of these experiments.
