Sarah is the president of the drama club and wants to publish a newspaper. Expenses are $.90 for printing and mailing each copy, plus $600 total for research and writing. The price of the newsletter is $1.50 per copy. How many copies of the newsletter must the club sell to break even?

OpenStudy (phi):

give a name to the unknown variable "number of copies"

OpenStudy (phi):

people generally pick a single letter

OpenStudy (ciarán95):

I'd say best thing to do here first is to just consider the amount of money Sarah will make on each single copy. Don't take into account the overall total of $600 for the research an writing of the newspaper. -She is selling the paper at $1.50 per copy. -It will cost her $0.90 to print and mail each copy. So, just taking into account these alone, she will make a $0.60 profit on each newspaper she sells. So, we now need to find out the number of copies she needs to sell to cover the $600 expense, making a profit of $0.60 on each copy. Let 'x' be this number. So,\[0.60x = 600\] \[x = \frac{ 600 }{ 0.60 }\], which you can work out to give you your answer. Good Luck! :)
