help? I don't understand how to do this :( Solve: 4|x| = 32 A. –8 or 8 B. 24 C. No solution D. 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know it's 8 but I don't know if its D or A

OpenStudy (imstuck):

first thing you need to do is divide both sides by 4 to get the absolute value alone. When you divide 32 by 4 what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8

OpenStudy (imstuck):

ok, then the way you solve absolute value equations is to rid yourself of the abs value signs, but when you do, you have the positive value of 8 as an answer and you also have the negative value of 8 as an answer because what this means is that you are 8 units away from the origin, and 8 units goes either way, negative or positive. So the answer is A.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thanks :)

OpenStudy (imstuck):

you bet!

OpenStudy (imstuck):

TY for the medal!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

np you deserve it :) can you help me with one more?

OpenStudy (imstuck):

i can try!

Solve. http://static.k12.com/bank_packages/files/media/mathml_18fbbe11e155be4c0f449092447c21a9df696f8f_1.gif A. No solution B. –2 or 2 C. –72 or 72 D. 72

OpenStudy (imstuck):

begin by ridding yourself of the denominator of -6. How would you do that? If this were a "regular" equation with no abs value signs, how would you do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so before I do this, there will be no "-6" and no "|"?

OpenStudy (imstuck):

let's pretend the equation looks like this for a minute:\[\frac{ x }{ -6 }=-12\]how would you move the -6? By doing what with it (other than throwing it out with the trash).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would love to toss it but Im not good at this and I want to say -6x = -12

OpenStudy (imstuck):

you would multiply both sides by -6 to get x = (-6)(-12). What is x then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 and 0.5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Venny

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont understand what x is :(
