Graph Question...

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

The location of an ant from a tree was 3 meters west (negative direction). The ant walked towards the tree at a constant rate and reached the tree in 2 minutes. If y represents the location of the ant from the tree, in meters, and x represents the time in minutes, which graph best represents this situation?

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

Im thinking either C or d because it says negative direction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We could both agree that all of them are a negative slope, correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

NOw, what does y, and x represent?

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

no the first 2 have a postive right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol, yes sorry. So, we eliminate that.

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

Ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now, what does y and x represent?

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

y = location of the ant from the tree

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, which is what number?

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

3 meters

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

x = time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct! What is x?

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then what number is it?

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

minutes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awesome!

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

lol now what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We both know the x and y values. Which graph shows that the line is touching y3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait, hold on.

OpenStudy (nikato):

well. obviously you can eliminate A and D because they have x-coordinates that are negative time cant really be negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm. I'm thinking B. Because the line is touching y3.

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

thats true

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

but B is positive...

OpenStudy (nikato):

B is corect

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Crap I meant negative 3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm confused about the signs though. @nikato

OpenStudy (nikato):

becaause you're starting time would be 0 seconds and the ant is 3 m west of the tree so (-3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, B was correct?

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

Ohhhh ok i get it now

OpenStudy (nikato):

and B is the only graph that contains (0,-3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@camerondoherty, sorry about that confusion. Also, @nikato, thanks for clearing that up!

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

Thank You Guys

OpenStudy (nikato):

C would be wrong because it shows the ant's starting location as 2 m east of the tree, which isnt what you want

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

and Since we eliminated A and D and now C it would be D

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

i mean B

OpenStudy (camerondoherty):

lol

OpenStudy (nikato):

yea.pretty much
