y=x^2-x-12

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

What about it?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

An equation is not a question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

calculate discriminant : \[D = b ^{2}-4ac\] than \[x = \frac{ -b \pm \sqrt{D}}{ 2a }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this counts for all second degree equations \[ax ^{2}+bx+c=0\]

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

You are missing the objective of math. To state and solve problems.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

You have not stated a question @mabreyc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't think the sole purpose of math is to state problems :). You're getting philosophical there hhe. The only reasonable question here was to calculate the zero points of the function. So I gave him the tool to do that :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But you're right. His question is incomplete.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Yes, that is a reasonable assumed question, but math is supposed to teach learning skills and one of those skills is: How to ask questions. There is nothing philosophical about that :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, you're absolutely right :-)
